Job Summary
Assists the Engineering and Development Department with various tasks related to land use, zoning and development initiatives. The intern will work closely with experienced planning professionals to gain practical experience and contribute to ongoing projects.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs routine office tasks including data entry, file management, copying, answering telephone, assisting with walk-in questions and responding to e-mails.
• Scans and files permits, project plans and reports.
• Prepares public notices and mailings for public hearings.
• Assists with creating maps and utilizing GIS systems for spatial analysis.
• Assists with investigations of zoning violations, including site visits and taking digital photos.
• Attends public meetings, assisting other Engineering and Development staff as appropriate.
• Reviews project applications to evaluate whether projects conform with the Municipal Code.
• Processes permits for common project requests.
• Assists in gathering public input and feedback for planning projects.
• Support the planning team in plan development and implementation.
• Draft content for Village e-newsletters regarding ongoing projects.
• Conduct research on best practices in planning, zoning regulations and sustainable development.
• Provide literature reviews and summarize findings on specific projects.
• All other duties as assigned.
  Essential Knowledge and Skills
  Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area within a Village department, which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following tasks:
  
  
• Knowledge of general principles and methodology of urban planning and zoning.
• Knowledge of and ability to use GIS applications to generate maps and modify existing files and databases.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of research and data collection.
• Knowledge of effective writing techniques.
• Statistical, algebraic or geometric knowledge and ability to apply such knowledge in practical situations.
• Knowledge of computer programs and applications, which may include Microsoft Office, Adobe, database management and Internet applications.
• Oral communication and interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures clearly to the public.
• Ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously.
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, governmental regulations and legal documents.
• Ability to write reports, memos and business correspondence using proper spelling, grammar and punctuation.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
• Ability to work with the public in a friendly, tactful manner.
  
  Qualifications
  
• A student enrolled in or accepted into a degree program related to urban planning, geography, environmental studies or a related field.
• A valid driver's license or ability to obtain one.
  Supplemental Information
  Physical Requirements
  Position requires extreme accuracy and prolonged sitting in the performance of daily duties and frequent repetitive keyboarding motion for preparing reports and other documents. The position also requires walking and some standing and lifting of boxes. Must be able to travel occasionally as needed.
  
  The equipment required to be used for this position includes a phone system, desktop computer, copy machine, fax machine, and scanner.
